People + Spaces, with and without
This collection of photos meditates on ideas of the ephemeral and in particular the human subjects' (or lack thereof) relationship to the space they do or do not occupy. The physical architecture of a space invites a human subject, or mourns the loss of one, or possibly hides one. When a frame is occupied by a person, their relationship with the photographer is oftentimes palpable and intimate. When the subjects are photographed without their knowledge, their intimacy to their environment is revealed in what might be perceived as an awkward, stilted, embarrassing way. How are we really engaging with our environments when we take up space? How do we engage once we have left them? What do we leave behind, tangibly and intangibly?
